Weekly Musings: Preserving Summer

Hi Reader,

Last Sunday afternoon, my kitchen became a little canning factory.

For hours, I blanched and peeled peaches, stirred bubbling pots, sterilized jars, got a few steam burns on my arms, and listened for that satisfying pop as each lid sealed.

When I finished, the counter was lined with jars of peach jam and preserves.

Looking at them now, I realize I wasn't just preserving peaches.

I was preserving a season.

Ayurveda teaches us to live in rhythm with nature. Summer gives generously—long days, ripe fruit, warmth, and abundance. But the seasons always change. They are meant to.

There is something deeply comforting about carrying a little of today's abundance into the future.

We do this in more ways than we realize.

We preserve friendships with regular phone calls.

We preserve our health through daily habits.

We preserve memories by slowing down enough to notice them.

And we preserve ourselves by creating small rituals that continue to nourish us long after the moment has passed.

Each jar on my counter reminds me that good things don't have to be rushed.

Sometimes the sweetest gifts come from taking the time to care for what nature has already provided.

As summer continues, I hope you find something worth preserving—not just in your pantry, but in your life.

This Week's Practice

Choose one thing this week that feels abundant.

Maybe it's tomatoes from the farmers market, herbs growing in a pot, an evening walk while the light lingers, or simply dinner shared with someone you love.

Don't rush through it.

Let yourself preserve the moment by being fully present.

Sometimes that is enough.

With warmth,

Marisa

Hi Reader, Last night, while I was teaching yoga, I found myself getting a little lost in the teaching. There weren't too many students, so I was able to bring them to the rope wall and spend more time with the standing poses. We were working on lengthening the spine, creating space along the sides of the rib cage, and opening the chest and upper back. At some point, as I stood there explaining the poses, I realized I had entered an almost meditative state. The words and directions seemed to...

Hi Reader, I was in Colorado recently for my nephew Sid’s wedding (Sid also happens to be the person behind much of the web work for my business). Weddings have a way of bringing together people from all the different parts of our lives. Family comes from near and far. People you haven't seen for years suddenly appear in front of you. There are long conversations, short conversations, old stories and new ones. And, in this case, some very big Colorado skies. Not long before the wedding, I had...

Hi Reader, There is something about August that always makes me want to do a little less. Actually, if I'm being honest, this feeling usually starts before August 1. Lately, I have been waking up and thinking, I don't really want to do that today. Not in a dramatic way. I still have things to do. I still teach, write, answer emails, make plans, cook food, take care of the house, and show up for the people I love. But my body seems to have other ideas. My body is on a beach vacation in Italy....
