Hi Reader, Thank you for signing up for the free talk on Ayurveda last Friday evening! Whether you were able to join us or couldn’t make it this time, I’m so glad you showed interest in exploring the profound wisdom of Ayurveda. Many of you had really good questions and concerns about your health and I hope I was able to give you a few suggestions that resonated. The one self-care take home for all of you was the Kitcheree recipe. I am including it here for everyone~ Recipe for KitchereeKitchari is a traditional dish in Ayurvedic medicine (a holistic healing system that originated in India over 5,000 years ago). It's considered a tridoshic food, meaning it's believed to balance all three doshas (Vata, Pitta, and Kapha) and is suitable for all body types.1/2 c yellow mung dhal1/2 c white basmati rice2 tsp grated fresh ginger1 tsp cumin powder1 tsp coriander powder1/2 tsp turmeric powder2 tsp lemon juice4-6 cups water1-11/2 c chopped vegetables of your choice2 TBSP Ghee1/2=1 tsp saltOption 1: StovetopThe best way to get flavorful kitchari is to sauté the spices in the ghee first. In a 4 qt saucepan, heat the ghee, then add spices and sauté for a minute oruntil the spice fragrances awaken. Add the beans then the rice and sauté fora minute or so. When all the ingredients have been infused with the flavorof the spices, add the water. Once the water starts boiling, immediatelyreduce the heat to medium-low and add the vegetables of your choice. Cookingtime will vary depending on the source of heat, altitude, and choice ofvegetables. It should take anywhere from 30-45 minutes. Add salt, lemonjuice, and freshly chopped cilantro before serving.Option 2: Rice CookerPut everything in the rice cooker. Add water and let it cook. It usually shutsitself off in about 20 minutes. The consistency should be generally soft andmushy.Option 3: CrockpotPut everything in the crockpot. Add water and let cook for 4-6 hours dependingon your crockpot setting (some have high, medium, and low settings). Theconsistency should be generally soft and mushy.
