Eat, Pray, Love got it wrong

Hi Reader,

It’s not Eat, Pray, Love.

That version of things sounds better. It sells books. It makes for a good story.

But it’s not how the body actually works.

In Ayurveda, the “three pillars” of health are much less romantic:

Food.
Sleep.
Sex.

Preferably in that order.

Nothing exotic. Nothing to chase. Just the things most people overlook while trying to do everything else right.

What I keep seeing—working with people, and in my own life—is how easy it is to focus on the extras while the structure underneath starts to slip.

And when that structure isn’t there, nothing really holds.

I wrote a short piece breaking this down—what the three pillars actually mean, and why they tend to matter more than whatever else you’re trying to fix.

You can read it here:
👉 The Three Pillars of Ayurveda (and why Eat, Pray, Love missed the point)

It’s simple. Maybe uncomfortably so.

But usually that’s the point.

With warmth,
Marisa

P.S. If you’re reading this and thinking, “okay… but which one of these is actually off for me?”—that’s usually the right question.

I offer 1:1 consultations where we look at exactly that and make a simple plan from there.

You can book a session here.

If you’re not sure yet and want to talk it through first, you can also book a short intro call here.

Or just reply to this email—I read all of them.

P.P.S. Thursday nights in San Francisco (7:30–8:30 pm at Folk Yoga, 6th Ave & California) if you want to come practice in person.

Hi Reader, A small note before we begin—I haven’t shared something new in a couple of weeks. Not because there isn’t more to say, but because I’ve been sitting with something that feels more essential. Lately, I’ve been thinking about how much of modern life is just… deciding. What to eat, when to eat, whether you should be fasting or not.Which supplements. Which routine. Coffee or matcha. It’s endless. And what I see—again and again—is not a lack of discipline. It’s exhaustion. There’s a name...
