Why summer travel can leave you feeling “off” (and what Ayurveda can do about it)

Hi Reader,

One of my favorite things about summer is that it naturally invites us to explore.

We visit family, travel to new places, take road trips, hop on airplanes, and step away from our usual routines. Travel can be incredibly nourishing—but it can also leave us feeling a little…off.

Have you ever returned home from a wonderful trip feeling grateful and happy, but also tired, scattered, or like you’re having a hard time settling back into your normal rhythm?

Ayurveda has a beautiful explanation for this.

All of that movement, change, and stimulation can increase Vata—the dosha of air and space. And while movement is an essential part of life, too much can leave us feeling depleted.

The good news is that supporting yourself while traveling doesn’t have to be complicated. There are simple, accessible practices you can begin anywhere—without buying anything new or adding something extra into your bag.

I wrote this week’s blog with two simple Ayurveda practices you can do to support digestion, calm the nervous system, and feel more grounded wherever you are.

Whether you are traveling this summer or simply moving through a busy season of life, remember that your body is always communicating with you.

Sometimes it only needs a little support to find its way back to balance.

Wishing you joyful adventures, smooth travels, and moments of stillness wherever this summer takes you.

With love,

Marisa

Hi Reader, Last night, while I was teaching yoga, I found myself getting a little lost in the teaching. There weren't too many students, so I was able to bring them to the rope wall and spend more time with the standing poses. We were working on lengthening the spine, creating space along the sides of the rib cage, and opening the chest and upper back. At some point, as I stood there explaining the poses, I realized I had entered an almost meditative state. The words and directions seemed to...

Hi Reader, I was in Colorado recently for my nephew Sid’s wedding (Sid also happens to be the person behind much of the web work for my business). Weddings have a way of bringing together people from all the different parts of our lives. Family comes from near and far. People you haven't seen for years suddenly appear in front of you. There are long conversations, short conversations, old stories and new ones. And, in this case, some very big Colorado skies. Not long before the wedding, I had...

Hi Reader, There is something about August that always makes me want to do a little less. Actually, if I'm being honest, this feeling usually starts before August 1. Lately, I have been waking up and thinking, I don't really want to do that today. Not in a dramatic way. I still have things to do. I still teach, write, answer emails, make plans, cook food, take care of the house, and show up for the people I love. But my body seems to have other ideas. My body is on a beach vacation in Italy....
