Meditation Is Easier Than You Think

Hi Reader,

People often tell me, "I can't meditate because I can't stop thinking."

From an Ayurvedic perspective, that's like saying, "I can't exercise because my muscles get tired."

The mind thinks. That's what it does.

Meditation isn't about eliminating thoughts. It's about changing your relationship with them.

Ayurveda recognizes that our minds, like our bodies, have different constitutions. Some people have minds that move quickly from one idea to the next. Others become intensely focused but easily frustrated. Some feel heavy or sluggish and have trouble finding motivation. Meditation helps bring balance to all of these tendencies.

One of the simplest ways to begin is not by trying harder, but by sitting comfortably, noticing your breath, and allowing yourself to be present for just a few minutes. Over time, many people notice they react less impulsively, sleep more deeply, and experience moments of genuine ease that carry into the rest of their day.

In my own teaching, I don't believe meditation needs to be mysterious or intimidating. There are basic steps to take to guide you along and it begins by first showing up. That's why every Thursday evening, after a yoga practice that is either flowing, gentle restorative or a combo of all (I see who shows up and what the group needs) and then I teach meditation beginning with the body and usually include a mantra (that you recite quietly to yourself). I always explain everything so that the mystery or unknown becomes known. Usually the meditation part last for about 15 minutes then we take a final relaxation/savasan pose and I often include essential oils. Then everyone quietly goes home and has a nice night of sleep. If you've been curious about meditation but unsure where to start, I'd love to show you how to begin.

Join me Thursdays from 7:30–8:30 p.m. for Yoga & Meditation at Folk Yoga on the corner of 6th Avenue and California Street in San Francisco. It's a welcoming hour to unwind, reconnect with yourself, and end the day with intention.

Looking forward to seeing you soon,

Marisa

Hi Reader, As I write this, we're standing right at the threshold of summer. The days are longer. The sun is stronger. Schedules seem to get busier. Children are finishing school, vacations are being planned, and many of us are feeling pulled outward after the quieter rhythms of winter and spring. In Ayurveda, this seasonal transition is important. Summer is associated with the qualities of heat (even in the cooler San Francisco climate), intensity, brightness, and activity. These qualities...
